Computer Art, Grade 9, MYP

The focus of this course is the use of technology in the arts
environment. Students will learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop
and Dreamweaver to produce digital images and web sites. The project
emphasis is on how to design a sophisticated original web site

course can be applied to projects in other courses, and be useful
to students in everyday life, both now and in the future.
Photography, Grade 9, MYP
Code: AWQ1O8
Students are introduced to the creative use of photography. They
will learn how digital SLR cameras work and how to use the camera
settings correctly to achieve a desired effect. Students do not need
to have their own equipment as all will be supplied by the school.
They will also learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop and how to
improve the quality of their images on computer, as well as how to
manipluate images the way magazines do to models and celebrities.
Methods of displaying the images include print and mulitmedia.
Music, Grade 9, MYP

Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding
of the language of music, including the elements, terminology and
history. Beginners and experienced players are both welcome in this
class.
Visual Art, Grade 9, MYP
Code: AVI1O8
This course emphasizes learning through practice and students will
use the elements and principles of design to produce expressive artwork
using a variety of materials (drawing, painting, clay, textiles,
printmaking, illustration, and more). They will analyse their own
work and that of others, and study work from various time periods
and cultures. |
Media Art, Grade
10, MYP
Code: ASM2O8
Recommended Preparation: AWS1O8 or AWQ1O8
Students will continue their digital arts studies
through digital video production involving camera work, editing,
digital music composition, digital photography and animation. Students

Music, Grade
11/12, IB Standard Level
Code: AMU3M7/AMU4M7
Prerequisite: AMU1O8 or AMU2O8
The art of music demands that the educated musician and music
lover be able to recognize and articulate musical elements realized
in diverse examples of music making. A vibrant musical education
fosters curiosity in, and sensitivity to, the musical worlds which
surround us. Students will learn, and be able to demonstrate, the
use of appropriate musical language and terminology to describe
and reflect their critical understanding of music. They will develop
their perceptual skills in response to music. They will learn and
be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of music in
time and place, and demonstrate development of their performance
skills through ensemble music-making. Through the analysis of selected
diverse listening examples and printed scores, students will learn
the language, the notation and the fundamental elements of music.
Through further investigation, students will explore the usage
of the elements of music in a variety of contexts – through
music of various cultures, styles and genres.
Visual Art, Grade
11/12, IB Standard Level
Code: AVI3M7/4M7
Prerequisite (one or more of): AVI1O8, AVI2O8, AWS1O8, AWQ1O8, ASM2O8
All students will do both studio work and a Investigation Workbook,
but may choose which one will be marked internally (worth 40%
of the final mark) and which one will be marked by an external
examiner through a presentation of work and an interview (worth
60% of the final mark).
for Visual Art students: Expression
in visual arts is characterized by forms of visual representation
which reflect the cultures of different societies. This is the
only course in the IB Program that focuses on training the right-side
of the brain and on acquiring the observational skills needed to
succeed in other areas of study. Artistic expression ranges from
traditional forms embedded in particular societies and cultures
to the varied and dispersed practices associated with design, craft,
drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Artistic learning
requires a high level of cognitive activity that is both intellectual
and emotional. Study of visual arts allows students to discover
ways in which to interpret and comment critically on the human
condition. This course emphasizes learning through practice and
students will use the elements and principles of design to produce
expressive artwork using a variety of materials (drawing, painting,
clay, textiles, printmaking, illustration, and more). They will
analyze their own work and that of others, and study work from
various time periods and cultures. No prior experience in Visual
Arts is required.
for Digital Art students: We are
at a time of unprecedented growth and innovation in digital arts,
and the place of digital media in contemporary society, and in
our everyday lives, has been firmly established. Digital art is
firmly linked to science and technology, which are fundamental
to its creation and physical substance. Even students who do not
plan a career in digital media will benefit greatly from this course,
which teaches students how to creatively use digital media to present
ideas. In this course students will apply the digital arts skills
they learned in the MYP digital arts courses to the exploration
and production of computer arts projects. These may include digital
photography, digital imaging using Photoshop, digital video, digital
music, website design, net art, animation, digital installation,
or any combination of these. As well, students will learn new techniques
and have the opportunity to explore digital media that they have
not tried. Students will develop an appreciation for both the potential
and limitations of digital media. As well, students will explore
ethical issues related to digital media and the ease with which
ideas may be expropriated and manipulated and question how this
alters our perception about what is “original”.
