This course continues the emphasis of the Grade 9 Locally Developed Compulsory course in English in emphasizing key skills in reading, writing, oral communication and thinking skills that students need for continuing success in secondary school and outside school. This course could act as a bridge between the grade 9 Locally Developed Compulsory English course and the Grade 11 Workplace course. Students read key informational and literary text forms, including novels, editorials, magazine feature articles and poetry, for personal and academic purposes. They use their knowledge of media to create media works. Students write in a variety of narrative and non-narrative forms for real-life purposes, including world of work, using appropriate and correct language. In particular, the course encourages students to develop and reflect upon strategies that will improve their literacy competence and confidence.

This course emphasizes practical writing and communication skills that are needed in the world of business and technology.  Students will analyze the characteristics of effective models of business and technical communications; gather information to write reports, business letters, memos, manuals, instructions, and brochures; and integrate graphics and text, using technology appropriately for formatting and special effects. They will also make a number of oral and visual presentations.
