About Crime Stoppers
Mission Statement...
Crime Stoppers is a partnership of the public, police and media which provides the community with a proactive program for people to anonymously assist the police in solving crime, contributing to an improved quality of life.
About Student Crime Stoppers...
The Student Crime Stoppers Program encourages students with information concerning a criminal activity to call 1800 222-TIPS anonymously. Callers never have to give their name or testify in court. The call is taken anonymously and given a code number for reference. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display. We now have operators working around the clock 24 hrs. a day, 7 days a week. If your tip leads to an arrest you can earn a cash reward of up to$1,000.00. Crime Stoppers can take information in any one of 140 languages. However, for reasons of security, Crime Stoppers can't receive tips via e-mail.
This program is designed to bring Students, the Community, and Police together to create a harmonious and safe learning environment. Students have the right to learn and live their daily lives without having their property stolen, being harassed, threatened, or assaulted.
The first Student Crime Stoppers Program within Metropolitan Toronto was officially launched as a Pilot Project at West Humber Collegiate Institute in the City of Etobicoke on April 5th, 1994. The first step in the implementation process involved setting up a Student Board of Directors composed mainly of well motivated students, including an administrator of the school - (teacher\mentor) a police officer and school trustee. The program was so well received W.H.C.I. has continued as the model for other schools coming on board.
Student Crime Stoppers Board...
This group of representative students in your school works with a police liaison officer and a sponsoring teacher to publicize the program, advertise the Crime of the Week and to raise money through school activities for the program. The board manages the program. The board does not investigate a crime and never learns the name of the person who committed the crime.
A Little History About the Origins of Crime Stoppers...
Crime Stoppers was the brain child of Canadian born Greg MacAleese, a Detective with the Albuquerque Police Department in New Mexico in 1976. Greg had run out of leads in a homicide investigation and out of frustration appealed to the public for assistance. He went so far as to produce the first re-enactment which was aired on local television with different formats available for radio and print media. Anyone providing information regarding this murder would be eligible for a cash reward.
Within hours of the broadcast a young individual called in valuable information that resulted in the arrest and conviction of two individuals who were sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.
The growth has been dramatic with Crime Stoppers implemented in more than 1,000 communities worldwide. In November 1982, Calgary was the first Canadian city to start the program, followed by Edmonton in 1983. Hamilton was the first city in the province of Ontario to implement the program and there are currently over 90 programs across Canada, over 40 in the province of Ontario.
Metropolitan Toronto Crime Stoppers began in 1984 and on April 1, 1986, Toronto and Regional Crime Stoppers Inc. was founded and under this umbrella includes Toronto, Peel, and York, forming one of the largest programs in North America.
